If you haven’t heard this story, you might not believe it. Heck, most times, I don’t believe it myself.
It was my 10th year of running a thriving full time wedding photography business, The Vondys, with my husband, when 2020 happened. I think we all know what happened then. 🙃
It was as bad as you think. Let’s just say at one point we thought about selling our house just so we could pay everyone back and go run and hide.
A business I had spent a decade growing, nurturing and that fully supported me and my husband was almost completely destroyed in less than 2 months.
It was during this time that my online friend, Emily Ryan of Westfield Creative, needed support as she had lost her childcare due to the pandemic. I thought, sure, I can write emails! Little did I know I would fall head over heels in love with them. (and how Emily would become my biz bestie 💛)
After helping her for a few months, I thought, maybe I should trying emailing my list.
But by list, I mean a completely disorganized collection of past client’s emails in my gmail and a few scatterings of emails my old MailChimp email service provider collected. I’d emailed my list in the past. I told them mini sessions were available - no response or actions taken. I’d remind them their galleries were closing - no response or actions taken. I figured email just didn’t work for photographers. Experts must mean some other type of business provider.
I could not have been more wrong.
I sent one email and earned $2600.
I gathered up (almost) all of our emails from the past decade. Yes, it took awhile but it was worth it.

This was the moment I fell in love with email. And the moment it suddenly it made so much sense why so many entrepreneurs repeatedly insist you need an email list. (irony: now I’m that entrepreneur 😂)
But I’ll admit, I was still skeptical. Could it always work or was it just a fluke?
I sent 3 more emails to my list and made another $1200 from the same list. By the end of the year I made an additional $13k in email income alone. This extra income quite literally saved my photography business. The biggest downside? The realization that I hadn’t been using my email list to its full capacity for a decade. Let’s just pretend I only made 10k extra year for 10 years… that’s 100k I left on the table. 🤦🏻♀️ I’ll get over that, someday.
My next thought was: Do other business owners know about this??
I realized I would have utilized email a lot sooner if someone had just broken it down simply and showed me results like mine. Or better yet! If it was something I could outsource to someone else so I could stay focused on other areas of my business that demanded me and only me. Why isn’t there anyone helping small business owners with their emails?
Lightbulb.
